Distillation Column
Distillation columns separate and purify components in mixtures by exploiting differences in volatility. Process design is based on feed composition, product targets, operating pressure, and mass and energy balances.
Process calculations determine whether trays or packing are used, as well as column diameter, height, and the pressure-temperature profile. The condenser, reboiler, decanter, auxiliary tanks and automation interfaces are evaluated together with the column system.
- Definition of feed composition, flow rate and product-purity targets
- Mass and energy balance
- Selection of tray or packed column internals
- Column diameter, height and pressure-temperature profile
- Condenser, reboiler and decanter integration
- Materials, mechanical design and automation interfaces
- Static verification and finite element analysis (FEA), where required
Process calculations may be performed by Feyas engineering or, depending on project requirements, with specialist engineering and consultancy support. Fabrication inspection is carried out according to the defined plan; third-party inspection can also be arranged on request.
Integrated Column Design for the Separation Process
The complete system, from column internals to auxiliary equipment, is addressed in alignment with the process objectives.
- Design Based on Mass and Energy Balances Feed and product targets are converted into the column’s fundamental process calculations.
- Process-Appropriate Column Internals Trays or packing are selected according to flow and separation requirements.
- Integration of the Column and Auxiliary Equipment The condenser, reboiler, decanter and automation interfaces are planned as one system.
- Mechanical Design and Fabrication Inspection Mechanical verification, fabrication steps and requested inspections are managed within the project scope.
Column development begins by defining feed analysis, product targets, operating pressure and utilities. Process calculations determine column internals and dimensions, while mechanical inputs define materials, wall thickness, supports and connection details.
Specialist engineering or consultancy requirements may be planned according to the project scope. Mechanical verification, fabrication inspection, documentation and requested third-party inspection are clearly defined in the delivery plan.
